Omega and Clooney in Up in the Air

Written by James Matthews

One of 2010’s most talked-about movie releases is Up in the Air starring George Clooney as Ryan Bingham, a man who is hired by corporations which are downsizing. It is his task to communicate the bad news to employees who are losing their jobs. Bingham describes himself as a Termination Facilitator.

The film, directed by Jason Reitman, has been universally praised by critics and has had an enthusiastic box-office reception in every market where it has opened. It had more Golden Globe nominations than any other movie, including one for Clooney as Best Actor and awards for Clooney’s co-stars, Vera Farmiga and Anna Kendrick. Reitman was nominated both for his direction and his screenwriting and the film is up for consideration as Best Drama. The Golden Globes are considered to be a strong indication of what movies might receive Academy Award consideration.

Up in the Air is a timely release – its theme of corporate downsizing resonates powerfully with recession-era movie audiences. While the screenplay sizzles with dark humor – much of it delivered by Clooney – it is a perceptive observation of these precarious economic times.

Sharp-eyed viewers will notice that Clooney’s character, Ryan Bingham, wears an Omega Hour Vision wristwatch. Clearly, the times are not as tough for the man who delivers the bad news as for the people who receive it. Additionally the great fit of his sophisticated attire such as his custom suit and silk tie push this towards users evermore.
