Bulova Watches

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008

Bulova is a New York based corporation making watches and clocks.

Bulova was founded and incorporated as the J. Bulova Company in 1875 by Joseph Bulova (1851-1936), an immigrant from Bohemia. It was reincorporated under the name Bulova Watch Company in 1923, and became part of the Loews Corporation in 1979..

Bulova established its operations in Woodside, New York and Flushing, New York, where it made innovations in watchmaking, and developed a number of watchmaking tools. Its horological innovations included the Accutron watch which used resonating tuning forks as a means of regulating the time keeping function. In July 1941 Bulova paid $9 for the first television commercial, a 10-second spot on WNBT during a baseball game between the Brooklyn Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies.

Watch Review: Omega Planet Ocean and Omega Seamaster Professional

Wednesday, September 19th, 2007

INTRODUCTION
Since I own both of the latest versions of Omega dive watches, I thought it would be a worthwhile Endeavour to do a comparison between the two. The first is the latest and greatest from Omega; the Planet Ocean 2201.50.00 - 42mm black on black on bracelet. The other is the Omega Seamaster Professional: Electric Blue 2255.80.00 - 41mm blue face with polished bezel on bracelet. Ideally, I would have liked to compare my PO to the black on black SMP (2254.80.00) as it would have been a more of an “apples to apples” type of review, but sometimes you just have to work with what you got.

James Bond Watch Stolen!?

Tuesday, September 11th, 2007

MASKED raiders who stole watches worth thousands of pounds may have been members of a professional gang, it has been claimed.

Two men, wearing caps, hoods and scarves, smashed their way into Lister Horsfall jewelry shop on Corn Market, Halifax, and yesterday.

They forced open the front door grille and shattered the lower window before bursting into the shop and taking Omega watches – James Bond’s latest timepiece of choice – Anonimo watches and gold jewelry.

After studying

CCTV images, manager Nick Horsfall said he believed the burglary was the work of professional and highly organized criminals. “The speed at which they got into the shop was incredible”, he said. “It looked like the work of professionals. They knew what they wanted.

“The CCTV is not the best quality because it’s dark but they are good cameras so we’re hoping something will come from that.”

Mr Horsfall, whose family has owned the business for four generations, said he discovered the raid when he arrived for work at 5.30am.

Mark McManus, of Calderdale CID, said police were checking town-centre CCTV.

He urged anyone with information to come forward. He said the two men wore dark clothing, one with a light-colored baseball cap, the other wearing a scarf wrapped round his face. They were carrying a large tartan bag.

He isn’t wearing a Movado so what is he wearing!

What is a Helium Release Valve (HRV)

Monday, August 27th, 2007

When divers swim in deep water they normally wear “Dive Watches” they special watches are designed to withstand the water pressure. One of the major issues is the helium build up in the watch case as diver goes deeper. Therefore the watch company’s have designed Helium Release Valves or HRV’s. Now each manufacturer has there own unique way to release the helium for example Rolex has a unique way of releasing the helium by letting it go though the protective rubber seal. Omega has a screw to release the heluim.

Note: if you own a Movado Watch do not swim with it :)

Watch Review: Omega Seamaster planet ocean - 2209.50.00

Friday, August 24th, 2007

The second worry free reason is that my particular model has a stainless steel bracelet with a wet suit extension capabilityOmega Seamaster planet ocean - 2209.50.00 and a two release button mechanism that won’t open the clasp unless both buttons are depressed simultaneously. The bracelet is solidly constructed and is beautifully designed. Both the fold over extension and the wet suit extension fit nicely within the clasp without extending on to the bracelet links. I know of other bracelets that the fold over linkage extends into the bracelet links and leaves score marks on the links after a time.

I would say that the next best to the PO bracelet is the Breitling Professional II bracelet followed by the Rolex, but that’s just my opinion. The PO range also have rubber and leather straps available, but I don’t think they look as nice as the SS bracelet. I suppose that one could always buy a PO of their choice with the SS bracelet and order the strap later. This would be a lot cheaper than doing it the other way round I would think. The only possible gripe I might have with the SS bracelet on the PO is the lack of finite adjustment inside the clasp. Omega have not chosen this option and have half size links that can be removed for resizing smaller. I believe that Omega have done this by design and not accident to minimize the use of spring-bars in their bracelet and by doing so reduce the chances of the bracelet separating without warning. I had this happen to me on another watch with a bracelet while I was parking my car. The bracelet on my PO has really strong sleeve pins connecting the links and the clasp. These have to be removed by a special tool. The only springbars are the two attaching the bracelet to the lugs of the watch. Even these are a real job to remove unless one has the right tool and the technique as they are very strong springs! I tried to remove the bracelet from the lugs with a cheap spring-bar remover tool and ended up bending the tool!

Watch Review: Omega Planet Ocean vs Rolex Sea Dweller

Rolex Dweller

VS

Omega Planet Ocean

CASE & CRYSTAL

As you can see from the case dimensions, both watches are fairly similar in size. Compared to the 45.5mm PO, I think the 42mm version makes for more of an “apples to apples” comparison with the SD.

Watch Review: Omega Aqua Terra Railmaster

Monday, August 20th, 2007

With Omega’s full line of watches, there are quite a few to choose from. I contemplated on getting another SMP but later decided I wanted to have something different. I finally zeroed-in on the Seamaster Aqua Terra, with its classic simple understated design, somewhat similar to the Rolex DateJust line. Of course, compared to the Rolex, Omegas are much more reasonably priced and can be debated as offering better value. The Aqua Terra also boasts of its CoAxial Escapement movement which Omega touts to be a more accurate movement because of its unique low friction design. By the way, similar to most of their other models, Aqua Terras are also offered with a quartz movement.

After researching the AT line quite extensively, the Railmaster Model (which is part of the Seamaster AT line) looked most appealing to me because of the even more simple no-nonsense “minimalist” design. Information I gathered says that the original Railmaster was actually the inspiration of the whole Aqua Terra line. The clean balanced look of the Railmaster with no date window looks like a larger version of the Rolex Explorer 1. Also in some respects, it is quite similar to my other relatively “simple” watch, the Rolex No-Date Submariner (another watch based on a 1950s classic design).

Watch Review: Omega Speedmaster 3510.50

Monday, August 20th, 2007

After 15 years loyal service from my Tag Heuer F1 and a significant birthday on the horizon, I went looking for a new watch last year. I always had it in my mind that I wanted an Omega Seamaster Professional, but after endlessly surfing the net and looking through the windows of ADs, I set my sights on the Omega Speedmaster. I am fascinated with the heritage of the Speedmaster and love the classic and timeless design. The Speedmaster never seems to go out of fashion and looks good with a t-shirt through to a suit. I settled on the 3510.50 Speedmaster Automatic (Reduced ) for a few reasons.

1/ I liked the fact that it looked very similar to the legendary Moon watch.

2/ It has an Automatic movement compared to the manual winding movement of the Moon watch.

3/ You get the Moon watch look and the Omega reputation for about $1000 (Aus) less than the Moon watch.

4/ I am no “Big watch“ fan, this felt right for me on a 7” wrist.

12 months down the track, I am very happy with my choice.
